Copper alloy possible coin weight. A probably cast flan hammered on one side only, possibly with a long cross with features in its quarters. Of these, only one is clearly visible, and is subdivided by another plain cross with a heart in diagonally opposed angles and square panels in the other opposed angles, an arrangement possibly mirrored in the diagonally opposed quarter of the larger cross. A denomination this may have checked has not been identified, though this reporter would welcome better informed comment. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1650. Diameter: 24.7mm, Thickne…

Lead possible weight. Cast plano-convex weight with a central moulded aperture of diameter 4.7mm. Shrinkage on the flat surface may suggest this was cast in an open mould. Patinated. The hole might have been intended for stringing as a line weight, though there is no marking to suggest this - the finder kindly notes this was found near other net sinkers close to the old course of the River Don. For a game piece, a class of early medieval object also of this form, it might accommodate a wooden peg for use with a holed game board such as Hnafetafl. The mass might suggest this to repres…

Lead net sinker. A weight made by rolling a rectangular billet of cast lead sheet of thickness 1.4mm, which would be wrapped around the selvedge of a net, in this case with an overlapping seam; patinated, and lightly squashed. The weight may in this case have been deposited or lost while attached to the net, which might be used for fishing or wildfowling. Examples from the riverside settlement at Flixborough suggest a local Middle Saxon use for weights of this form on the River Trent, though in London similar weights came from a late medieval boat in the Thames at Blackfriars bridge. …

Lead net sinker. A weight made by the rolling of a rectangular billet of cast lead sheet of thickness 2mm, which would be wrapped around the selvedge of a net; patinated, pierced and lightly squashed. In this case, the weight appears to have been unclenched for its removal from the net. A pierced hole might suggest light gnawing by a dog, so an eager interpreter might posit a fisherman - or perhaps a wildfowler - accompanied by his hound. Examples from the riverside settlement at Flixborough suggest a local Middle Saxon use for weights of this form on the River Trent, though in London…

Lead weight. Cast trapezoid weight with a large oval sunken panel on one side; patinated. The mass may suggest this to have represented one [underweight] averdepois ounce. It was possibly formerly equipped with an insert supplying the deficit, though the form of this object is distinct from that of those early medieval weights with inserted objects, which are typically discoid. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700. Length: 27mm, Width: 27mm, Thickness: 4.9mm, Weight: 25.17gms

Lead spinner. A disc cut from cast lead sheet and with a finely denticulated outer edge formed by a series of short knife cuts. A pair of holes of diameter c.2mm are neatly punched through the centre. Patinated. A thin cord, perhaps of horsehair, would be passed through both holes, and the cord would then be twisted. The sudden pulling of both ends of the cord would cause the disc to rotate, and the serrated edge to produce a buzzing sound. This common plaything is thought to have its antecedents with drilled 'buzz-bones' made from pig metapodials and found in 12th-century and later m…

Copper alloy medallion. A small milled disc with tiny [diameter 0.8mm] opposed lugs for its fixing or rotation in an outer frame [lost]. On one side, the Lord's Prayer appears in miniscule capitals over 14 lines, including supplementary phrases forming part of the Anglican format of that prayer. The other side bears the heading: DOXOLOGY with nine lines of text below. The penultimate line invokes the Holy Ghost, a form eschewed by Catholics who would use the term Holy Spirit [derived from the Latin Spiritus Sanctus], and therefore points to an Anglican or Nonconformist context for the…

Copper alloy pipe tamper. Solid cast angled bar in the form of a right arm crooked with a hand holding a ball, resembling the posture of a bowler's arm at mid-delivery; the wider proximal end of the arm is flat to serve as a tamper. Were its form indeed to be associated with the game of cricket, which had its origins in south-east England in the late 16th or early 17th century, this would suggest an 18th-century or later date; the conical tamper is too wide for use with the narrow bulbous clay pipe bowls of the 17th century. Copper alloy ring. Cast ring of almost round section, retaining traces of casting flash around about half its internal circumference and with a discernible outer mould line. Lead weight. Cast plano-convex weight, with a central dimple on its flat side suggesting shrinkage after casting in an open mould. Patinated, abraded and probably chipped. The mass does not immediately suggest correspondence with any particular system. Though a little over one quarter mark [62.2gms], a measure used for silver and for bread and a possible value noted for a single discoid weight from medieval London (Egan 1998, tables 14-15, fig. 229), the abraded condition and irregular form leave the loss of an uncertain amount of fabric possible. Cast annular biconvex fishing weight, with a sharp circumferential aris between its halves, a bevelled central aperture, and with eight moulded hemispherical bosses equidistantly spaced around either side.
