Lead cloth seal. A cast pair of discs linked by an integrally cast strip, with a hidden lug probably involved in the attachment of one disc to the other. Patinated One side, the larger disc, bears the stamped Roman numerals XIX. The other side bears a lattice pattern; this might be part of a portcullis motif (also known on a Yorkshire seal, appearing on both sides: Egan 1994 page 175, fig. 24 no. 107). Similar lettering appears on a cloth seal also bearing the date 1619 (ibid., page 173, fig. 22 no. 91), and the date of that object may be an apt guide to that of this example. Suggest…

Incomplete front part of a medieval to post-medieval copper alloy scabbard chape with a small part of the scalloped upper edge missing. The upper part is trapezoidal with a quatrefoil aperture below a pair of transverse grooves, and the lower part is convex sided with filed radiating grooves on the front face above a terminal lobe. Cf. de Reuck 1991, 26, centre top, and left hand, second row. Height / length 38.5mm. Width 30.5mm. Late 15th - 16th century.
