An incomplete cast copper-alloy buckle frame dating to the Medieval period, c. 1300-1400. Only the outer edge of the frame and its shoulders survive, the remainder of the frame and plate missing in old damage. Originally the buckle would have been 'D' shaped in plan, demonstrating knopped terminals to the strap bar (which are still visible). A copper alloy, Medieval scabbard or sheath chape for a dagger or knife, AD.1100-1250. The object is formed from a single sheet of copper alloy that has been folded at the mid point into half to wrap around the leather. The object tapers towards the point of the scabbard. Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A medieval annular brooch comprising a 30.4mm diameter copper alloy ring 4.7mm thick with a rounded cross sectional profile, deeply incised radial line or cable decoration and traces of gilding. There is a recess for the pin to rest on as well as a constriction for the pin. This limits the movement of the pin strongly suggesting this object is a brooch not a buckle (Egan and Pritchard, 1991: 64-65). The pin itself is 57.4mm long and comprised of twisted lengths of thick iron wire; when compared to other medieval copper alloy brooches with iron pins (e.g. GLO-68AE4E) it is highly unusu…
