A crudely cast lead unidentified artefact, possibly a weight or a lead adhesive to anchor a fixing into stone. It is probably of post-Medieval date, about AD 1600 - 1900. It is in the form of a blunt cone, with one flat and one rounded face. In the centre of the flat face is a loop or staple of fine copper alloy wire, perhaps a suspension loop or anchoring. There is also a short stub of thicker gauge copper alloy wire protruding from the side, though the function of this second wire, which appears to have no connection to the loop, is uncertain. The object is 17.7mm long and 17mm in d…

An incomplete, cast lead artefact, possibly a steelyard weight of Roman date, AD 43 - 410. It is in the form of a truncated cone, rounded at one end and with a hollow depression in the base. Two stubs of ferrous wire project from the base, possibly the remains of an iron loop. These two sections of wire are also visible in the rounded upper surface, perhaps suggesting a second loop. The weight has a light cream patina. It is 23.5mm high and 17.3mm in diameter at the base. It weighs 32.62gm. These weights are discussed in Geake, H., 2000 ,Finds Recording Guide. (Unpublished).

There may have been sword stamped at 1 o'clock, this area is now very worn. It is 13.7mm in diameter and 3.2mm thick. It weighs 2.93gm. It was probably originally an eighth (0.125oz) of an ounce (two drams) with some weight lost to corrosion.

A cast lead weight of Medieval date, about AD 1300 - 1500. It is shield shaped, with rounded corners. The upper surface is slightly convex and the underside concave. The upper surface is decorated with a single, narrow groove mirroring the shape of the weight, forming a narrow border, within which are traces of a fleur-de-lys design in low relief. There is also a deep, U shaped groove in the centre of the upper edge, resulting in the weight becoming heart shaped. Unusually for a weight it has been penetrated, almost in the centre, by a ferrous rivet, or length of thick wire, suggesting…

A cast lead alloy spindle whorl, of Walton Rogers type C2, dating from AD 1100 - 1600. It is biconvex and has a wide median band. There are faint traces of decoration, probably raised dots. A misshapen or damaged cast lead artefact, probably a miscast or damaged spindle whorl of Early Medieval to post-Medieval date. It appears to be Walton Rogers Form A1, suggesting a date of about AD 500 - 850 (owing to the fairly small central aperture). However, traces of cast decoration on the curved face may suggest a later date, up to AD 1600. The whole whorl is rough, pitted and the edges are damaged and partially missing. One face is flat and one is convex. There is a perforation, somewhat off-centre which is also misshapen. This has a maximum diameter of 8mm. Traces of a design, …
