Iron nail fragment. Tapering wrought iron shank of squared section; the good survival of metal inferred from the mass of the object implies a post-medieval date. The straight shank t may indicate that the nail was deposited while attached to timber which has been burnt or decayed to release it in an unbent form. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800. Iron nails. Twenty one wrought iron nails and nail shank fragments, of lengths between 96.5mm and 31.5mm. The square section and ovoid heads, sometimes offset, would suggest these to have been hand made in the medieval or post-medieval periods. The good condition may point to the latter period, while the straight shanks throughout may indicate that the nails were deposited while attached to timber which has been burnt or decayed to release them in an unbent form. One T-shaped nail [first in the second row] may alternatively be a horseshoe nail. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800…
