Copper alloy brooch. Cast hinged Colchester Derivative brooch, Mackreth type CD H 4-5 indeterminate. Possibly plain tubular wings clenched behind retain an axis bar for a cast pin which remains, albeit bent. The wings are clasped by a D-section bow with a thin but pronounced ridge at its crest. The lower bow may be beaded, and is at all events thinner as it nears the foot [lost]. Abraded, which has introduced some doubt as to the type to which this example may have belonged. Copper alloy brooch. Cast hinged Colchester derivative brooch, Mackreth type CD H 4.k. Tubular wings with a single incised groove at either end clenched behind to retain an axis bar for a hinged pin of which the stub remains. The wings are clasped by a plain D section bow, which tapers towards a plain foot with the stub of an unpierced catch plate behind it. Now bent so as to exaggerate and contract the curve of the bow. Copper alloy pin head, as kindly identified by the finder. Solid cast biconvex discoid head with the stub of a tapered shank of maximum diameter 4.9mm projecting. Iron staining may suggest deposit together with an item of iron. The surface of the pin head bears now ill-defined decoration in relief, possibly of a floral or vegetal character. Probably for dress or coiffure, or possibly from a more recent hat pin. Abraded. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, probably 1500-1700. Height: 14.1mm, Diameter: 14mm, Weight: 5.96gms

An incomplete cast copper alloy dress fastener (dress hook / hooked tag) dating to the early post-medieval period. The fastener is broadly triangular in plan with four projecting knops, two down each long edge. There is an incomplete rectangular attachment loop at the top of the fastener, and a rounded, blunted 'hook' at the opposing end. The front surface of the fastener is decorated with moulded relief in the form of a robed human, front facing bust and upper torso in a field of pellets and annulets. An incomplete early post-medieval (1500-1700) copper-alloy book clasp, a hook piece with minor damage to the terminal expansion, and a missing rivet. It retains one corroded iron rivet c. 3 mm in diameter, in situ, at the terminal end. The clasp is formed from a thin rectangular strip of metal with one squared off end, beyond which a flat, rounded-end curved hook projects (2.9 mm wide, but tapering along its length), and the splayed terminal to the other. Cast unusually thick square section band, thickened and slightly expanded at its bezel which appears to bear a small oval panel with the motif of a 'tick', as used by a popular brand of sportswear. Traces of gilding or of gold paint appear on both the inner and outer surfaces of the band. The diameter of the ring could suggest its use by a child, so it might be a toy. Incomplete iron and copper alloy handle from an item of cutlery, probably a knife, dating to the period c. AD 1650 - 1850. It consists of a central iron tang, now heavily corroded, sandwiched between two covex sheet copper alloy plates. The plates exhibit a scrolling foliate design in low relief. Each plate is held in place by two rivets spaced evenly along the surviving length. The tang and both plates all termnate in old breaks. See also: BH-C67493.

An incomplete perforated quartzite pebble hammer/'mace head' of Mesolithic to Neolithic date c. 9000-2355 BC. The surviving pebble is roughly a third of the original object creating a stunted C shape, the object being D-shaped in cross-section. The central perforation is convex, so when complete, this would have been an hour-glass shape. One of the breaks is smooth the other is irregular and rough to touch. The patina of the pebble is brown on the sides, grey on the curved outer surface and a lighter grey on the breaks. The quartz grains are particularly easy to observe in the latter …
