An incomplete cast copper-alloy Medieval barrel padlock dating from the 12th-16th century.
The case is rectangular in section with flat ends and bulges around middle. One end of the case has a rectangular slot for the key and at the other end the rectangular aperture is divided into two by an internal bar. This would have taken the spring mechanism, a detachable portion that would have had an integrally cast, flat projection, terminating in the loop to hold the point of the padlock pin. A incomplete cast copper alloy barb-spring Medieval padlock case. The barrel is made of two rectangular shapes, the top ( to which the prong is attached) being wider than the bottom. In section it is two adjacent squares with a square below and centred. Together the squares form a 'T' shape. One side of the barrel is patterned on both the upper and lower rectangles.On the bottom rectangle the pattern is a series of equally spaced vertical lines..The top rectangle has an wavy toothed line.
