A cast lead artefact, possibly a weight, probably of Medieval to Post Medieval date, about AD 1350 - 1800. It consists of a quarter segment of a sphere. Both flat sides and the outer hemispherical side are smooth, undecorated and evenly patinated with a light cream patina. The weight is 15.4mm long, 8.5mm wide and 7.7mm thick. It weighs 6.23gm. This is equal to 4 pennyweights in the English Troy system, but is also close to quarter of an ounce, or 100 grains. The shape being a quarter sphere could argue for it being a 0.25 ounce weight.

Copper-alloy post-medieval circular trade weight, dating to the period c. 1558 - 1603 AD. The weight is circular in plan and rectangular in section, with a raised rim on the upper face. The upper face is stamped with the sword of St Paul and an ewer, denoting that the weight was made by the Founders Company in London. Also stamped are the crowned letters EL, attesting that the weight was approved during the reign of Elizabeth I. These motifs are arranged around a central sub-circular depression with central dot. The back of the weight is flat and betrays linear score marks where the o…

A lead perforated weight of probably Post Medieval to Modern date, about AD 1500 - 1900. It is flat and rectangular in section, and an elongated octagon in plan. There is a keyhole shaped hole through the weight at one end (rounded at one end and narrower and rectangonal at the other); it is not clear whether it was always intended to be this shape, or whether it has been worn by suspension on a loop or rope. The edges and corners of the weight are worn and rounded. This may be from water damage, since the weight was found near a river. This has led to speculation that the weight may …

A complete lead-alloy weight of uncertain date. The object is circular and plano-convex with a flat base domed top. An irregular central perforation runs through the object and all surfaces appear undecorated. The metal has a light brown patina and is worn. The object is 23.9mm in diameter, 6.9mm thick and weighs 17.3g. The perforation is 9.5mm in diameter. The term 'weight' is used here in its broadest sense to include uses that do not involve weighing (e.g. holding-down, tensioning, etc.). They were commonly used from the Iron Age through to the post-medieval period and are di…
