Treasure Case 2018 T438 Description: A Roman silver ring, classified as type II in the Henig system, with space for a former mount that is now missing. The object shows a degree of verdigris indicating a substantial amount of copper present within the silver. The ring is probably of a second century date, using similar examples on the database. A fragment of a ceramic possible spindle whorl of Roman date, c.AD 43 - 410. The object is formed of a semi-circular disc of possible Black Burnished ware (BB1) pottery. Approximately half of the object has been lost to worn breaks. One side of the remaining portion displays a slight raised rim, the other side has a recessed central band. A perforation is present through what would have been the middle of the object when complete. The object is 39.7mm long, 14.3mm wide, 10.7mm thick and weighs 8.2g. The coin weight is circular and uniface with a single grooved border that encloses a punched crowned above a fleur-de-lis around a central recessed pellet. The reverse is flat and undecorated. An incomplete copper-alloy cruciform brooch of Early-Medieval date, c.AD 450 - 600. All that remains of the brooch is a zoomorphic terminal, possibly in the form of a horse's head. The fragment is narrow, comprising a spatulate terminal from which the D-sectioned bow extends, terminating in a worn break. The spatulate terminal bears moulded double banded chevron decoration extending from a central ridge. Both surfaces are decorated with a ring of raised pellets. One side is significantly more worn than the other. The metal has a light brown/white patina and is worn.
