Object type: JEWS HARP
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete post-medieval iron 'Jew's harp', missing only the tongue. The harp consists of a rounded C-shaped end which extends to two prongs, which would have rested in the mouth. There is a groove on the centre of the rounded end where the tongue would have attached. It is sub-lozenge shaped in cross section. The iron of the harp is corroded with fragments flaking. This object probably dates to the post-medieval period c.1600-1800, but could be slightly earlier.

An incomplete cast copper alloy purse bar of the early Post Medieval period, dating from circa AD 1450 - AD 1550, Williams Class D. The purse bar comprises a central heart-shaped block with a vertical circular aperture through which is the remains of the suspension loop bar. At either side of the heart-shaped box are integrally cast, short, circular cross-sectioned, funnel shaped arms which then constricts into a circular-sectioned bar with expanded rounded terminal. Two loops of copper alloy wire have each been wrapped around the arms, and these would have formed part of the frame fo…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman plate brooch, dating to the period c.AD 200-350. The brooch is oval in plan with a raised oval rim around a recessed cell at its centre, which would have held a stone or coloured glass insert. There is traces of gilding around the outer rim but the brooch is too worn to discern any incised or moulded decoration around this area. The reverse of the brooch retains the hooked catchplate and most of the single lug for the pin. Around these two elements is the remains of a white metal (silver) coating. Plate brooches usually date to the second and thi…

Object type: MINIATURE OBJECT
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy miniature socketed looped axe dating from the Bronze/Iron Age transition to the early Roman period, that is c. 800 BC-AD 200. The axe is complete with a broken loop by which it formed a pendant, the loop being located on a thin edge. There is a rectangular 'socket' at the butt end of the axe and possibly a small casting spur on one edge. Miniature socketed axeheads can be dated from the Bronze Age/Iron Age transition through to the Roman period, though a date towards the earlier end of the spectrum is more likely. They probably functioned as amulets or votive offer…

A fragment of a cast copper-alloy socketed axe of Late Bronze Age date. Only the blade edge survives intact, the remainder now missing due to old breaks. The blade edge narrows to a flat tip, still relatively sharp, and is curved in form with expanded sides that narrow in towards the main section of the axe. In cross section the axe head is rectangular in plan and is hollow, showing the beginnings (or end) of a socket. The fragment has a light blue-green patina but much of this original surface is missing from one side of the blade. This is a fragment of a Late Bronze Age socketed axe…

Fragment of a cast copper-alloy probable beaded or knobbed bracelet of late Hallstatt to late Iron Age (La Tene III) date (c. 650 BC - 43 AD). The bracelet consists of two slightly curved hemispherical hollow lobes or domes conjoined with a ribbed collar. Each lobe is of a slightly different size. This was initially considered to be a fragment of a MIA brooch (Adams' Type 2Bb2 / regional 'vale' brooch), as the hollow domes and ribbed collars are a feature of these brooches, but closer inspection suggests the curve could indicate this is a fragment from a beaded bracelet or…
