Description: A complete silver penannular brooch dating from the late Roman period (c.AD 350-450). The brooch comprises a silver circular sectioned hoop that is sub-oval in plan. It is decorated with un-grouped crosscuts which run around the entire periphery of the brooch. The terminals are coiled upward at right angles to the plane of the brooch, and are undecorated. The pin is attached, simply folded over the circular section of the brooch, and moves freely around the circumference; it too is undecorated. The knop from one end of a wing or the top of the head of a Roman developed crossbow brooch of AD 340 to 460. The knop is biconical (onion shaped) coming to a slightly off centre point on the outer edge. Below the knop is a large collar sloping on the side adjacent to the knop and flat on the other face, where it abutted the wing. Beyond the collar is a circular cross sectioned shaft ending in an irregular, worn, break. It measures 18mm in height and the head is 10.8mm in diameter by 9.9mm high, the shaft is 3.2mm in diameter. Incomplete Roman crescent-type Aesica brooch. Broken rearward hook, spring missing. Both wings are decorated with an oblique line, and a vertical line at the outer edge. The bow has a vertical median rib and twin knops. The back-plate has a rivet for the missing separate applied crescent, splayed foot. Broken catch-plate on the reverse. The wingspan of the brooch is 21.5mm. Length 34mm. Mid 1st century.

Incomplete Roman copper alloy Colchester Derivative, Rear Hook brooch (Mackreth, 2011, type CD RH). C-sectioned wings, both with spool moulding flanked by knurled ribs, broken rear hook, D-sectioned bow with knurled median rib and flange on both sides. Spring, pin and catchplate missing. An incomplete copper-alloy Iron Age to Roman penannular brooch, dating to c. 50 BC- AD 100. It consists of half part of the frame. It is oval in cross-section with one end slightly flattened and rolled in itself creating an oval loop; the other end is broken and worn. The surface is very worn and damaged. Cf. A cast copper alloy Roman trumpet brooch, dating from AD 75 - 175. The upper bow of the brooch is sub-circular in section with a ridge on the front face, and the middle of the bow is decorated with an acanthus button moulding consisting of a central prominent, transverse ridge flanked by a row of three petals above and below.
