The knop from one end of a wing or the top of the head of a Roman developed crossbow brooch of AD 340 to 460. The knop is biconical (onion shaped) coming to a slightly off centre point on the outer edge. Below the knop is a large collar sloping on the side adjacent to the knop and flat on the other face, where it abutted the wing. Beyond the collar is a circular cross sectioned shaft ending in an irregular, worn, break. It measures 18mm in height and the head is 10.8mm in diameter by 9.9mm high, the shaft is 3.2mm in diameter.
