Just under half of a medieval lead bulla, a magisterial bulla of the Grand Master of the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (also called the Knights Hospitallers). The object has been deliberately cut in half, with an additional triangular section cut from the middle. The raised, stamped, image on the obverse when complete would have depicted the Master, kneeling left with a patriarchal (double-barred) cross on the left, flanked by an alpha and omega. Only the alpha and part of the cross is now visible; there is a six-pointed star below the alpha. The design is encircled b…

A conical lead weight of uncertain date. This artefact has a sub-circular cross-section and flat base of maximum 22.9mm diameter. The weight has a height of 15.1mm and the external walls between the base and conical apex appear straight but on close inspection have a slight concave curve. A vertical circular aperture is present through the centre of the weight. At the conical apex this has a diameter of 4.7mm and at the weight's flat base this is slightly more oval in shape measuring 5.0mm x 4.7mm. The walls of this aperture are cylindrical. This perforation may have been used to allo…

Lead possible weight. Cast rectangular weight with lightly bevelled upper edges, smooth regular surfaces and a slight patina. The mass does not immediately suggest correspondence with any particular system of measurement and, indeed, the good surface condition may suggest a more recent date. This might relate to those modern rectangular objects of lead which appear from their condition to have served ancillary functions to the operation of machinery, possibly as buffers, shock absorbers or similar inserted objects. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1900. Length: 24.6mm, Width: 22…
