Object type: CHAIN
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Darlington
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An iron chain of uncertain date, probably post medieval or modern in date. The chain comprises twelve mostly twisted oval loops, c. 53x20mm in size. At one end there is a single round loop (44mm), followed by an oval loop and an incomplete round loop. At the other there is a swivel (76mm), followed by a large oval loop (68x24mm) with a fragment of a further loop adhering to it. The presence of the swivel may indicate that this is modern, although Roman swivels were found at Neupotz (Hanemann, 2014, Abb. 254).
