Object type: SHOT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A roughly hemispherical, cast lead artefact, possibly part of a broken musket ball, dating from the post-Medieval period, about AD 1600 - 1800. The upper surface of the hemisphere is smooth and unremarkable. The flat underside is rough and also unmarked. There are traces of a possible casting sprue across the corner between the convex face and the flat face. The object is in good condition and has a light grey patina. It is 20.4mm in diameter and 7.3mm thick. It weighs 16.51gm. When complete, and if it is a musket ball, the shot would have been large enough to have been fired from a musket.

Lead alloy weight. A concavo-convex fragment of lead alloy, cut down to trapezoid form with a hole of diameter 3.5mm probably roughly drilled from one side, producing a countersunk aperture on its convex side. The metal is delaminating, a feature most usually observed on cast post-medieval spoons. Here, a large spoon bowl may have been cut or broken to improvise a line weight for fishing. Alternatively, as it is thick for a spoon bowl, this may be a shard from the everted rim of a vessel with improvised provision for suspension. In either case, the addition of the hole was a crudely e…

Lead probable weight. Cast trapezoid billet neatly cut from cast lead sheet. Patinated. The mass may suggest this to have represented an underweight quarter of an ounce. It was presumably for private rather than commercial use, as lead weights slipped from official favour from the 17th century onwards. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1850.
