Lead vessel repair or pot mend. A small cast plug to mend a hole in a vess4el wall of thickness c.2.5mm, patinated and fiercely abraded. The small size and neat finish are thought to be characteristic of Roman pot mends, and the abraded condition of this example would be consistent with a greater age than most accompanying material. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Diameter: 15.8mm, Thickness: 8.1mm, Weight: 10.42gms

A late Medieval zoomorphic copper alloy spout probably from a ewer, dating to circa AD 1400-1550. The object is hollow and tubular in form. One end terminal has a long neck which is curved and would have been attached to a vessel. The opposing terminal is in the form of a dog's head with an open mouth from which a circular spout projects. The dog's head is formed of moulded decoration, and has rectangular shaped ears with rounded upper and lower edges, a squared brow and eye sockets formed from a curved depression placed below the brow before the spout extends. The spout has a dark gr…

A cast copper alloy leg fragment from a cooking vessel, probably a couldron or posnet of medieval to early post medieval date (c. 1200 - c. 1650) The leg has a trapezoidal cross section, it tapers slightly downward and terminates in an out-turned, pad-like foot. There is a thick green patina and some pitting. Butler, Green and Payne (FRG datasheet 41, 2009) observe that this form seems to have been in widespread use in the medieval period, but early 17th century examples are also known. Overall length 42.1 mm, width 23.7 mm, thickness 16.8 mm. Weight 83.3 g.

A fragment of the side or base of a Roman grey ware domestic vessel, dating from the second to fourth century AD. The vessel has been fired in a reduced atmosphere giving the fabric an even grey colour, a fabric similar to a miscellaneous (unsourced) local grey wares. There are no visible inclusions in the fabric. There are multiple small holes through the sherd, made prior to firing and apparently in a random manner. There are 15 complete holes and many other incomplete holes around the edges of the sherd. These perforations indicate that this sherd originally came from a strainer ty…

A fragment of a rim from a Roman Oxfordshire white ware mortaria dating from the late third century AD. The ceramic sherd is fully oxidised in to a hard off-white fabric. The fabric itself is free of inclusions however trituration grits have been added to the surfaces of the vessel. The grits are present on the rim and would have been abundant in the bowl of the vessel, however no section of the bowl survives. The Oxfordshire pottery industry was producing this type of mortaria at several kiln sites including at Cowley, Sandford and Oxford (the Churchill site and the Nuffield Orthopae…

A fragment comprising the foot and part of the leg of a cast copper alloy couldron of probable post medieval date. The leg is formed from three conjoined ribs, with the cental rib being thicker. This creates a broadly triangular cross-section. The inner surface is concave and the leg terminates downward in a flared, paw-like foot separated from the leg by a collar. The base of the foot is concave. Buttler, Green and Payne, (FRG datasheet 41 2009) suggest a 16th - 17th century date for this form. Length 72.9 mm. Width 38 mm. Thickness 10.6 mm. Weight.187.9 g
