A complete but slightly misshapen post-Medieval gold posy finger-ring (c. 1600-c. 1700). Treasure case no. 2018 T417.
The outer face has an elaborate design of contiguous moulded motifs: hearts, tri-lobed floral sprigs and 'daggers'. The inner face has a phrase as well as a maker's mark and is inscribed:
'Constancy Weth Affection' (constancy with affection)
The 'W' is in the form of a crown which in heraldic terms is in the style of a 'Crown of Nobility'. The inscription is followed by the maker's mark in the form of a stamped capital letter 'R'.
20.2mm (length); 18.8mm (w…

Gold finger ring. A thin cast band of rectangular section bearing an externally incised inscription. This reads: + E D O + O N : T F + T R A N + A I F A, with heavily seriffed cross potent punctuation and unbarred A's, some with a vertical stroke in the place of the bar. The style of lettering broadly resembles that of the Short Cross coinage of 1180-1247, and probably points to a date in the first half of the 13th century. This reporter cannot venture upon the interpretation of the legend, though at this date it is likely to be Latinate. Malcolm Jones kindly comments on the reading a…

An incomplete cast copper alloy finger ring of 2nd - 3rd Century Roman date (AD 100-300). The bezel is a horizontal oval shape, which has been much abraded by movement in the ploughsoil. The external edge of the bezel is lost, however, this was originally filled with a cast four spoked whirlygig / wheel formed of four semi-circular arms projecting evenly from a central point. The spaces between this cast design was filled with a red coloured glass / enamel which has now decayed to a pale buff friable surface. The shoulder of the ring are also abraded but seem to taper and terminate in…
