Object type: GLOVE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead palm guard or sailmaker's glove fragment. A fragment from a rounded flat object cut from cast lead sheet, with a curving profile well-adapted to fit in the hollow of the hand. Both sides bear a series of fine scratches variously oriented, with those on the presently concave side clearer and presumably more recent. The object was bent to fit the user's hand, and had been reversed in the course of its working life. The edges of the object are knife cut, with two cuts on each edge meeting at oblique angles, a peculiarly methodical episode which would have ended its working life. Pat…

Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published
A crude, possible steelyard weight of possible Roman date, about AD 43 - 410. It is a bi-conical piece of lead with iron projecting at each end. The iron at one end is sufficiently central that it could have been a suspension loop, but at the other end it is well to the side. Weights of this form are usually considered to be Roman, but the steelyard was also used in the Medieval and Post Medieval periods. The lead has a grey and white patina and is pitted. It is 22.8mm in diameter and 19.8mm thick. It weighs 43.08gm. Allowing for corrosion having caused some loss of mass, this could …

It is broadly octangonal in plan, with a uneven base, a projecting lump preventing it sitting flat. The sides are angled, so the upper face is smaller than the base. The upper face has a deep angular depression in the top making it concave. The object has rough sides and a thin grey patina. It is 22.9mm in diameter and 16.6mm high. It weighs 45.69gm. Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete lead seal matrix of Medieval date. The remains of this artefact show that the original shape of the matrix was a pointed-oval (vesica-shaped).
