Lead weight. Cast conical to pear-shaped weight, flattened at its top, with a central drilled aperture of diameter 5mm. A series of angled cuts surround the aperture at the narrower end of the weight, in a rough left hand spiral arrangement, and these are perhaps distinct in their origin from other light and adventitious nicks on the body of the object. Patinated. The hole could indicate the provision of a separate loop, a typical feature of Roman steelyard weights. If so, it was withdrawn before corrosion could mark the object. An incomplete cast copper alloy steelyard (scale with beam arms of unequal length), of Roman period, probably dating between 1st and 2nd Century AD. Only the arm survives which is in three pieces. The steelyard is composed by longitudinal arm with notched calibratrions which is circular shape in cross-section and measures c. 270mm in length. On end of the arm widens into a circular knop (22.15mm in diameter) while the other extends into a rectangular shape plate with three holes for the attachement of the objects and weights. A Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Chapter 3, Part 3, c.f. Mackreth Type 4a, Plate 46, AD c. 80-120. The brooch is incomplete with the axis bar, spring mechanism, pin, and foot missing. The wings are semi-cylindrical in plan with wing / end caps partially intact.
