Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Leicestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Unidentified object, a flat lead artefact up to 7.5mm thick and in the form of an irregular pentagon in plan measuring up to 47.0mm in width and 37.3mm in height. Three of the edges are 30mm long, and the other two are 22mm. One face has decoration in the form of an incised circumferential line 7mm in from the edge. This is obscured along the bottom edge as the object appears to have been hammered and thinned along that edge, probably in antiquity, as it has a uniform thick white patination covering all faces. This may be a weight - but as it weighs 67.5g it would not appear to con…

County: North Lincolnshire

Lead weight. Cast conical to pear-shaped weight, flattened at its top, with a central drilled aperture of diameter 5mm. A series of angled cuts surround the aperture at the narrower end of the weight, in a rough left hand spiral arrangement, and these are perhaps distinct in their origin from other light and adventitious nicks on the body of the object. Patinated. The hole could indicate the provision of a separate loop, a typical feature of Roman steelyard weights. If so, it was withdrawn before corrosion could mark the object. The mass does not seem to relate closely to contemporary…
