The median longitudinal ridge running down to the front face of the bow slightly flattens after 12.15 mm from the head and is dec…

A complete iron horse shoe of late medieval to early post-medieval date (c. 1350 - c. 1700) The shoe has a broad web (46 mm at the toe, 33 mm at the heel) and is 130 mm wide. In overall shape, it matches the late medieval form described by Clark (1986, p. 3, fig. 8). Four nails are in situ in sequence on the branch of the shoe (possibly more are present on the quarter but due to corrosion of the plate surface they are not distinct). There is a calkin on the right heel, none seems to be present on the left. Assuming the calkin to protrude down towards the road surface, the whole plate …

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy Early Medieval mount in the form of a circular disc with and enamelled face. The decoration on the face is divided into four equal portions, each containing a triangular shaped penannular loop with the point facing towards the centre and the curved base position to the edge of the mount. The right-hand straight edge on each loop is broken; this geometric paten ultimately forms a central cross and allows the loops to form a knot motif. The centre of each loop is recessed allowing the centre to be filled with a yellow enamel. The cross and outer edge of the mount is also sl…

A Post-Medieval copper alloy handle from a cooking vessel such as a posnet or skillet. The handle is a shallow 'D' shape in cross section, with a flat upper surface and a convex, rounded reverse. There are rough breaks on both ends, one ot a c30 degree angle, the other transverse. The upper surface has three parallel but not equidistant (two on one side being closer together), longitudinal grooves but is otherwise undecorated.. When viewed from the side the handle has a very slight downward curvature which may be due to the break. The handle tapers very slightly from 24.6mm to 23.2mm …

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Gwynedd

A decorated byconical lead spindle whorl with traces of decoration on both faces. The nature of the pattern is not discernable but appears to include pellets. The use of spindle whorls spans from the Iron Age through to the Early Post Medieval period (Margeson 1993, 184). The size of the central perforation can be an indicator of date with larger perforations being indicative of an early-medieval to post-medieval date (Rogers 2007, 23-24). Lead spindle whorls also became more popular from the 13th century onwards and it is therefore probable that this find dates from the medieval peri…

A decorated byconical lead spindle whorl with traces of decoration on both faces. The decoration consists of chevrons and pellets. The pattern resembles whorls dating from the Roman to Medieval period (Bailey 2008, 71-77). An incomplete copper alloy early medieval disc brooch, dating from c. 5th to 6th century AD. The brooch is flat and circular, with a border of small punched ring-and-dot motifs running round the edge of the disc. Many of these motifs are now worn on the very edge, so that they appear crescentic. There is also a central circular dot. The reverse is not decorated. There is the remains of the sub-circular pin lug on one edge, with orange iron staining surrounding this, suggesting the pin was iron. On the opposite edge is the trapezoidal catchplate, now folded over so the end touches t…
