44 flint debitage blades probably dating from the Mesolithic period, about 9000 BC - 4000 BC. The debitage includes translucent light grey flint and dark grey opaque chert of poor quality. A flint piercer made on a bladelet dating to the Late Upper Palaeolithic to Mesolithic period (c. 20,000-4,000 BC). The piercer has been made on a tertiary flake of a mottled orange-brown flint. The bulb is retained as is the small fragment of the platform. There are two flake scars on the dorsal surface. The lower half of the left hand edge of the dorsal side has been worked with soft hammer precussion, becoming more invasive towards the tip of the piercer, which has detatched, possibly during production but potentially after deposition.

Object type: JETTON
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval copper alloy French jetton dating to the period c. AD 1418 - 1437. Crown type. Probably struck at Paris. See: Mitchener, M, 1988, p. 194, no. 535. The unusual weight and thickness of this example suggests it may be piedfort. Introduction of thicker and heavier piedfort jettons during the 15th century appears to have resulted from the popularisation of a new method of performing calculations in manual accountancy. A collection of stationary jettons which were heavier and thicker were issued as reference points for the lighter mobile jettons in order to make these calculations.

The fragment was found in an area that was known as part of Roman occupation, now known as Old Durham. However, much of the archaeological evidence has been quar…
