Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Calderdale
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint flake; a piece of debitage, dating from the Mesolithic or Neolithic periods, about 9000 BC - 2200BC. It is a tertiary flake of grey, partially patinated, battered flint. The distal end is a battered face, probably from post depositional damage. The sides are also damaged, but there does appear to be a striking platform and a bulb of percussion, suggesting that the flint was intentionally struck. In addition, flint does not naturally occur in this area. The flake is crazed and polished, and shows a lot of damage. It is 28.8mm long, 26.5mm wide and 11.7mm thick. 9.35g.

A flint probable microburin dating from the Mesolithic Period, about 9000 BC - 4000 BC. It is formed on a light grey flint tertiary blade. It is sub-oval in plan with a square proximal end. It has a snapped oblique distal end, with some removals to create the notch at the right side of the distal end. There is also some platform preparation. The microburin is 6.5mm long, 4mm wide and 1.8mm thick. 0.06g. This is an unusually small example. A microburin is the waste produce from notching and then snapping a blade to create a microlith.
