Lead shot. Cast ball with a flattened circumferential belt from set up, a distorting effect occurring at the instant of firing an unwadded projectile. The mass suggests this was used with a light fowling piece or 'rook and rabbit' gun. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800. Diameter: 11mm, Weight: 8.88gms

Lead shot. Cast ball with a circumferential rib, possibly interrupted at one site, though this might be damage incurred in manufacture when the ball was cut from its sprue. The rib shows this was intended for a rifle related to the Brunswick Rifle of the 1840's, though this object is for hunting rather than a military weapon, probably a light fowling piece or 'rook and rabbit' gun. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1840-1860. Diameter: 15mm, Weight: 10.69gms

Lead shot. Cast cylindrical slug, distorted by impact against a flat hard surface; patinated. The mass, at just over half an ounce, and the diameter, would be consistent with use as a supplementary load for a smoothbore muzzle loading pistol. This would be used to increase the 'stopping power' of a round. The use of eccentric forms of projectile was particularly characteristic of the 17th century. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1700. Length: 14.2mm, Diameter: 12.6mm, Weight: 14.85gms

Iron shot. Solid cast ball, with mould line. The mass exceeds the capacity of weighing equipment at the disposal of this reporter, though it does not feel inconsistent with a weight of c.5lbs or 2.3kg. The diameter is probably consistent with the 3½ inch bore of the light field gun known as a Saker or Drake - names drawn from those of hawks and reptiles, and applied to such weaponry in the 17th century. This was among the larger guns which might be deployed in open fighting, and at the smaller end of those used in the defence of fortified places, and on ships. Dr Kevin Leahy has comm…
