A complete cast lead-alloy weight of medieval to post-medieval date, c.AD 1300 - 1600. The weight is conical with a flat top and base and was likely formed by pouring molten lead into a thimble casing then allowing it to cool. Although this object has been described as a weight, it may also be a gaming piece. The length is 27mm, the width is 12mm. Thimbles have been in common use in England from the 14th century onwards and Geoff Egan (2010, p.265) states that no medieval thimble indisputably dating from before the 14th century has been found in England.

Circular flat-cylindrical lead-alloy weight probably dating from the late medieval to post-medieval, c. AD1500-1800. The weight has a whole in it possibly meant for attachment. The weight may have originally been used for 8 ounces. Egan (2001) illustrates a similar example on page 312, Fig.232, No.981, which is dated to the 13th century. Bailey (1993) illustrates similar examples of home-made lead weights used by traders on page 29, and a free-standing weight with a raised edge on page 33, No.43. The diameter is 52mm and the weight 233.17g.

Copper alloy ring that could be either a horse harness fitting from the Roman period or a ring buckle from the medieval period 40 - 1400AD. The ring has a cast round section with a smoothed surface and plain finish probably polished by wear. The mass indicates a solid casting. The diameter is 41mm and the weight 6.28g. Ring buckles are illustrated in Whitehead such as No 34. Larger ring buckles were probably used on belts at the waist or thigh. A cast lead object, probably a leather working palm guard. It is tear-drop shaped, and has one flat face, with a convex reverse. The surface is smooth, with a pale buff to green patina. Similar objects have been identified as Roman escutcheon filling; however, the smooth surface suggests this is more likely to be a palm-guard of medieval to post medieval date. The length is 58mm, the width is 37mm and the weight 163.23g. Similar objects on this database include; BERK-4BFFEB, KENT-A90908, BERK-7BC1A2

Copper alloy bar ingot with rounded and flattish ends 'finger' form. The ingot is D shaped in section with a flat base and convex tip and tapers in width and thickness from one end to the other. The length is 59mm and the width is 11mm. The ingot is not diagnostic and is therefore difficult to date; ingots of this form in precious metals have been found associated with late Early Medieval period finds. (Blackburn and Rogerson Medieval Archaeology 1993, 222-4). It has been suggested that copper alloy ingots from Norfolk of bar-like form and with transverse hammering may belong to the V…

Early Medieval to Post Medieval, cast lead alloy or lead, weights. Probably spindle whorls or net weights. Weight 1 - decorated with raised rays and pellets on both faces and is 31mm in diameter possibly 12th to 14th century AD. Weight 2 - undecorated and the diameter is 24mm probably 16th century AD. In the "Finds Recording Guide", Geake (2001, p66) points out that: "The function of lead weights would have varied, from spindle-whorls to fishing weights to trade weights." She adds that spindle whorls should ideally be circular and must have a central perforation (ibid.). It is poss…

A post-Medieval copper-alloy clock key. The flat-sectioned bow comprises two loops: the larger, oval, loop is at the bottom, with a drop-shaped extension above. Both sides of the bow have been incised to create the impression of a pair of entwined serpents whose open mouths meet at the base. A double moulded collar marks the start of the oval-sectioned stem, which has a hollow tip. Two forward-facing prongs would have made up the bit. The length is 47mm, the width is 27mm. A parallel for this piece was found in excavations in Exeter, where it was identified as a clock key and its…
