Copper alloy unidentified object fragment. A small part from the lightly expanded and bevelled end of a plain cylinder of estimated internal diameter 30mm, broken around all its other edges. This damage might hint at the failure of a mechanical component, and faint external circumferential marks across the outer surface may have arisen from a rotary movement of this or a related component. An origin in a small explosive projectile might also explain the cylindrical form and the severe damage it has sustained: in which case this fragment might come from a light cannon shell. The latter…

A copper alloy unidentified object, possibly of Iron Age or Roman date. It is a curved bar of copper alloy forming a semi-circular loop. The bar is oval to D shaped in cross-section. The inside of the curve is worn. There is a flat facet on the apex of the outer face, and a shallow circular depression in its centre. This appears to contain ferrous material, but when tested with a magnet it gave no response. The terminals of the loop are particularly interesting. There appears to have been a narrow bar of rectangular section projecting from the centre of each terminal. The golden brown…

A copper alloy unidentifed object of uncertain date, Iron Age to Post Medieval. It is a thick, curved rod, perhaps part of a loop or hook. It is of circular section at one end (7mm diameter) and tapers to an oval cross-section (6.5mm by 4.5mm) at the other end. It is not clear whether the ends are the original terminals or not. It is 22.4mm long, 7.4mm wide and 11mm thick. 6.6g. The metal has a well developed smooth green patina. The size and chunkiness is similar to that found on late Iron Age to Early Roman miniature terrets such as SF-4ABC26 but this fragment is too small to identi…

A fragment of glass, probably of Roman date, about AD 43 - 410.
The piece is a short rod, sub-circular in section and curled over at one end forming a rounded coil. The other end is incomplete and rough. It is not clear whether this is an intentional shape, or one resulting from glass working or post depositional melting.
The glass is translucent with a slight green/blue tinge. There are lots of bubbles internally, and some darker streaks. It is 29.4mm long, 14.8mm wide and 15.5mm thick. 5.9g.

Copper alloy dice. A dice for a simple gambling game. A cast solid cylinder of hexagonal section with one rounded end with a low knop bears a narrow [diameter 3.8mm] integrally cast handle with a fluted sleeve projecting from its other end. Six flat sides bear incised notation as follows: PUT 1 / TAKE 1 / ALL PUT / TAKE ALL / PUT 2 / TAKE 2. This object served as a spinning dice, rotated by gripping the handle between index finger and thumb. A possible incomplete Post Medieval strap fitting or strap mount dating from the 16th century. It is a strip of copper alloy that tapers into a hook at one end (now incomplete) and expands to form a plate at the other end. The plate is incomplete, but contains an iron rivet in the centre. It is 26.9mm long, 9.8mm wide and 2.6mm thick. It weighs 1.18gm. When complete, the plate may have extended into a heart shape with a second rivet through it, and the loop or hook would have been closed. SUSS-80D571 is similar and cites Read (1988: Fig 21, no.13) who illustrates a similar mount. He s…
