Lead spindle whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 10.3mm. The lower side as cast bears indistinct moulded decoration comprising a wandering line which may define sub-triangular compartments; the opposite side bears a hollow which may suggest shrinkage in an open mould. Patinated. The appearance of moulded decoration tends to associate this object with biconvex whorls of early post-medieval date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600. Diameter: 24mm, Thickness: 14.4mm, Weight: 42.34gms

Lead spindle whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 12.6mm. The upper surface is slightly sunken about the hole, but as finely moulded decoration appears here, this indicates a deliberately formed feature rather than the shrinkage of lead poured into an open mould. The decoration comprises fine straight lines which intersect at oblique angles around the decorated side, possibly forming a confined star of six points, a figure also known as the Star of Solomon [or latterly, of David]. There are indistinct traces of other decorative elements between the…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 10.2mm. The angular profile, broad circumferentially flattened belt and faint traces of moulded decoration suggest this to have been cast using one half of a biconvex decorated whorl as a master in a [probably] open mould to make a lighter copy. Patinated. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600. Diameter: 28.5mm, Thickness: 10.2mm, Weight: 39.54gms

A crudely cast lead spindle whorl of probable Late Iron Age to Roman date, about 300 BC - AD 410. It is of Walton Rogers Form C2 having no flat faces and carinated sides. The whorl is sub-circular and bi-convex. The central aperture is 5mm diameter. Whorls with central holes of less than 6mm dianmeter are more likely to be Iron Age or Roman than those with larger holes, however, this is not conclusive and a later date up until AD 1600 cannot be ruled out. The whorl has a patchy, cream patina. It is 27.8mm in diameter and 12.5mm thick. It weighs 15.77gm.
