Object type: BELL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy crotal bell fragment with 'sunburst' pattern decoration radiating from the sound slot that would have been of the underside of the original spherical shaped bell. The fragment has a semi circular panel with the initial 'H' at its centre; this would represent one of the founder's initials. Bailey (1992) illustrates two large crotal bells with similar sunbust decoration and the founders initials on the base on page 42, nos.29-30. This style of bell is dated to the late 17th century AD.
