A Medieval copper alloy pedastal-type seal matrix, probably dating to c. AD 1200-1400. The seal has an oval base, although its edges are highly abraded, from the reverse of which expands the faceted hexagonal-sectioned pedastal handle. The handle terminates in a trefoilate knop, with a drilled circuar perforation to form a loop, and with this preceded by a rounded collar. A complete copper-alloy double-ended seal matrix of medieval date, c.AD 1250 - 1450. The die of the matrix is circular with a tapering ovate sectioned handle extending from the reverse. The handle flares to a wide lozenge swelling with quatrefoil perforation above which the handle terminates in a second, smaller circular die. The largest die bears a central motif depicting a large capitalised letter W. Each arm of the W has a transverse bar forming a cross. A circumferential legend is also present which reads: S' CVnRD. The handle from a post-Medieval 'fob' seal matrix (c. 1700-c. 1800). This handle is made of sheet copper-alloy and the frame is made up of an openwork decoration of moulded foliage that is leaves and possibly bods. The fob seal would have comprised an oval intaglio which is missing. It is lacking a separate loop at the at the apex, but the inside of the uppermost openwork decoration seems very worn and thus it was very likely that was where a chain would have connected the swivel fob seal with the wearer's pocket/waistcoat. An incomplete post-medieval copper-alloy pedestal seal matrix dating to the 17th century. Description: The seal matrix is a conical shape with a narrow circular shank which widens at the top to a trefoil flat shaped handle, which is mostly complete althoguh the upper lobe is slightly broken. At the base the matrix widens significantly to accommodate the die of the matrix which is circular and emblazoned with an anchor. The entire handel is slightly bent out of shape also. Medieval copper alloy seal matrix, Length: 33 mm, width: 21 mm, thickness 4 mm, weight: 8.48 g. The matrix is pointed-oval and is a flat rectangle in cross-section. It has a small semi-circular loop, 8mm long, with circular hole on the edge of its reverse.
