Fragment from a cast copper alloy rod like handle, probably either a handle or possibly the foot of a copper alloy vessel, cauldron, posnet or skillet of later medieval or post medieval date (1300 - 1600). The bar or rod is cylindrical in shape, with a curved profile and oval cross section. Both the ends are broken although the breaks are worn and patinated suggesting the damage occurred in antiquity. There is no decoration present apart from a longitudinal ridge. The surface patina is a mid - light green colour with poor preservation. A light grey black powdery corrosion product is p…

A cast copper alloy pot leg resembling Butler, Green and Payne type 4a, probably from a cooking vessel of medieval or early post-medieval dat (1250-1600). The leg is rougly trilobed, the central raised strip projecting 1mm above the main shaft. There may have been a more defined foot but corrosion has reduced the relief elements significantly. When placed flat on its foot, the leg projects at a roughly 60 degree angle. The main shaft is heavily encrusted with verdigris and other various corrosion products, the variability of which possibly indicating a large amount of lead in th…

A complete cast copper alloy leg, possibly from medieval or post-medieval cooking pot or cauldron. The leg has two moulded furrows running vertically down the front face. The reverse of the object is flat, and where the object may have joined on to the main vessel there is a third face which is concave to fit the face of the vessel. Cast coppor alloy vessels became popular from c. AD1100, and gradually passed out of use between 1700 and 1850, superseded by cast-iron pots and by saucepans designed for use on kitchen ranges.

Incomplete medieval to post medieval foot from a cooking vessel such as a cauldron, posnet or skillet dating to the period c. AD 1300 - 1700. The leg has a worn break at the top. It is trapezoidal in cross-section with a slightly concave reverse and expands into the moulded foot. The front is divided by a prominent central mid-rib,flanked by a shallower rib on either side. It exhibits traces of sooting. The vessels to which these were attached were usually of a tripod form and were widely used from circa AD 1200-1700 for serving and cooking.
