A copper alloy zoomorphic terminalled strap end of later early medieval (later Anglo-Saxon) date, 800 - 1000 AD. The strap-end is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with two parallel sides. Those sides taper slightly along their length and terminate in a blunted point. The cross section of the strap end is sub-rectangular (D shaped) and profile is bowed having been folded through movement in the plough soil at the mid-point. The edges of the strap-end are also bevelled. The majority of the strap end is cast as a solid piece, with the exception of the widest part of the terminal which divides, in profile, forming a 'Peter Reavill49.97Lugwardine3HESH-2D55A090262017Thomas' Class A Type 21Shropshire Museum Service; Object Entry Form: E. 01542EARLY MEDIEVALSTRAP ENDRestricted Accessfinds-9026201110.510HESH-2CEEC8Complete800x41022images/preavill/11111421PAS5B02CEEC00187F42018-05-21T14:51:40ZCertainx410221147County / local importance1EARLY MEDIEVALCopper alloy41426EM1Circa47http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/EARLY MEDIEVALCertainCivil Parish2022-07-14T07:14:42.397ZLateHampshire1CountyEARLY MEDIEVAL1MiddleMetal detectorHAMP2CDEBA.jpg17765From finder1174871EM2.6DistrictCertain4HAMP174861050Greywellx410223.13Hart106272018-05-21T14:52:40ZReturned to finder3South EastCirca
A middle/ late early-medieval (750-1050) copper alloy strap-end of Thomas' Class B Type 1 (or B1), parallel-sided with wedge-shaped split end, stylised zoomorphic terminal and transverse-rib decoration.
The split attachment end comprises a top and back plate, each 0.6mm thick, and both have a (presumably decorative) V-shaped nick at the centre of their short edges. Either side of this the edges appear to angle slightly away to the corner. Below and in horizontal alignment with each other are two rivet holes (again on both plates) 1.5mm in diameter. The long edges of the wedge-shaped attachment end are slightly raised behind the join with the main body of the strap end, which is marked by a wide transverse ridge.
The shaft is D-shaped in cross-section (being flat to the underside) and undecorated except for a trio of transverse grooves just before the split end and just behind the zoomorphic terminal. It is 4.8mm wide and 2.5mm thick.
The stylised zoomorphic terminal narrows slightly from 4.7mm wide across the brow ridge to 4.3mm wide at the snout. The central part is taken up by two moulded triangles, apex-to-apex, longitudinally arranged. A horizontal rib extends from the apex to either edge where angled grooves emphasise a moulded triangle at 90 degrees to the face of the object, extending from the horizontal rib.
The underside of the strap-end is undecorated but has a vertical patch of silvery-grey substance, perhaps solder. Otherwise the entire object has a darkish-green, smooth and shiny patina. It measures 40.7mm in length, 7.8mm in max.width (at the attachment end), 2.6mm in max.thickness (at the attachment end) and weighs 3.13g.
Thomas comments that this type was introduced in the latter 8th or early 9th century and remained popular until the 11th. It is widely distributed in southern and south-east England and much less frequent north of The Wash.

Medieval (c. 1230 to c. 1400) strap end: The copper alloy strap end is an elongated triangle in plan with a flat small knop at the tip. It is composed of three places, the larger outer place which has damaged edges, an internal shorter plate used as a spacer and a plate on the reverse which is more narrow than the outer plate A copper alloy rivet holds the three plates together at the narrower edge. There is a rivet hole at the opposite terminal on the outer and back plate. The strap end is undecorated.
The surface is mottled dark green and is abraded.
The strap end measures 43.05mm long, and 11.69mm wide. It weighs 3.42g.
Egan and Pritchard (2002) illustrate similar examples (Nos. 604 and 611) and probably dates from c. 1230 to c. 1400.

Medieval copper alloy strap end fragment, Length: 30 mm, width: 23 mm, thickness: 3 mm, weight: 5.84 g.
The object consists of a fragment of the lower part of a 'lyre 'shaped strap end. The upper portion is sub rectangular in form but represents the lower portion of a crescent shaped fragment. It has two circular rivets present, sitting side by side, below a fragment of a complete edge, with a raised solid border, and sitting above a curved raised line forming the lower edge of the crescent. The upper part has an area of cross hatched and raised decoration. below the lower curved line is a 'trefoil' shaped projection with a sereis of linear depressions radiating outwards to its edges. The whole surface has traces of gilding. The reverse, which is plain, has traces of silvering all over it.

Medieval copper alloy composite strap end dating to the period c. AD 1300 - 1450. It consists of two symmetrical sheet metal plates with a forked spcaer in the centre, The forked spacer terminates in a projecting collared knop. The three components are held together by a copper alloy rivet at either end of the sheets. Both rivets sit flush with the surfaces of the plates.
