A complete cast lead-alloy weight of medieval to post-medieval date, c.AD 1300 - 1600. The weight is conical with a rounded top and flat base and was likely formed by pouring molten lead into a thimble casing then allowing it to cool. The object is 19.2mm tall, 17.5mm to 13.9mm in diameter and weighs 32.8g. Although this object has been described as a weight, it may also be a gaming piece. Thimbles have been in common use in England from the 14th century onwards and Geoff Egan (2010, p.265) states that no medieval thimble indisputably dating from before the 14th century has been…

A complete lead-alloy weight of uncertain date. The object is bi-conical with a flat base and domed upper surface. It is distorted and damaged. A central perforation running through it. All surfaces appear undecorated and are worn. The metal has a light brown/white patina. The object is 30.3mm in diameter, 10.2mm thick and weighs 41.9g. The perforation is 13.9mm in diameter. The term 'weight' is used here in its broadest sense to include uses that do not involve weighing (e.g. holding-down, tensioning, etc.). An incomplete copper-alloy unidentified object, probably dating to the Medieval period. It is an equal armed cross with waisted arms and slightly outward projecting crescent at each side of the arms end. It is hollow and open at the back, although it is not clear if in origin may have been closed. The front face has a hectagonal shallow dome at the centre of the cross. When found, there was an iron bar fragment resting at the back of one of the arms and a thin sheet of copper alloy which immediatley disintegrated, but still visible. The back face of the cross has traces of iron corros…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast, or rather miscast, spindle whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 11.5mm, possibly intended to be of plano-convex form; patinated. The plano-convex form might point to an early medieval whorl, or perhaps a failed attempt to copy one half of a biconvex early post-medieval whorl. |At all events, shrinkage lines around the hole show the whorl was cast in an open mould, which would be the simplest technique of casting at any date. Suggested date: Unknown, Early Medieval to Post-Medieval, 850-1600 Diameter: 31.6mm, Thickness: 10.6mm, Weight: 29.46gms

Lead shot. Cast ball with opposed flattened faces, probably from its inclusion as the middle ball of a multiple load. Patinated. The mass may suggest this to have been used with a pistol. The use of multiple loads, like that of other eccentric projectiles, was characteristic of the 17th century, though it might also occur accidentally at any time, especially when a shooter was under stress. Lead shot. Cast ball with flattened patches on opposed sides, of diameter 7mm and 10mm, the former perhaps from a ramrod and the latter perhaps indicating this ball to have formed part of a multiple load. Patinated. The mass, at well over one half ounce, may suggest this was possibly for a pistol of military specification. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Diameter: 16.2mm, Weight: 23.33gms
