An incomplete copper alloy trumpet brooch dating to the Roman period. The brooch has atypical oval or 'trumpet' shaped head. The bow tapers in width down the bow where it terminates with an ancient break above the foot. In the centre of the bow is an oval waist moulding consisting of a raised central ridge, bordered by a ridge on each side and another ridge both above and below. It is of a type not classified by Wild, but with some stylistic similarities to Wild Class II: ring headed, which dates from the mid first to second century (AD 43 - 200). An incomplete copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill type, of Roman date (AD 80-120). cf Mackreth 2011, 4.d Plate 47. The brooch consists of the head and wings and the upper part of the bow. The axis bar, spring, pin, foot and catch plate are missing. The wings are semi- cylindrical in plan with damaged wing / end caps. At the reverse of the head is a rectangular slot that would have housed the spring. An incomplete iron cleat. The cleat is oval in plan and rectangular in cross section. There are two integral arms on the logitudinal axis, one projecting at each edge. Both are angular in cross section, and one curves outwards. Both terminate in worn breaks. Both sides are undecorated. The cleat is corroded in places and has a brown-orange patina on the surface. An incomplete copper-alloy headstud brooch of Roman date, c.AD 75 - 200. The head of the brooch comprises rectangular wings, one lost to a worn break, the reverse of which form an integral double lug hinge mechanism. An axis bar and pin no longer survive.
