Lead weight. Cast pump seal weight. A discoid weight with bevelled edge, and with a lug on its underside to engage with an oiled leather seal. The bevelled edge is interrupted where the seal would pivot above a chamber of the pump. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1900. Diameter: 53.7mm, Thickness (clear of lug): 10.5mm, Weight: 188.38gms

Pottery. Roxby or Dragonby Greyware. A body sherd from a very large vessel, abraded, water-rolled, and with a recent mend by the finder. This sherd was kindly identified by Wallace Collyer, Helen Fry and Sandra Firth of the North Lincolnshire Pottery Research Group. The appearance of this sherd in a coastal context is of considerable interest in that it evidences intercourse, possibly entailing the transportation of commodities in bulk, between the south bank of the Humber and the mouth of the Estuary. And possibly further on from there, as is implied by later Roman report of the ship…

This artefact is formed of a sheet metal disc of 80.0mm diameter and 0.4mm thickness. This disc has several bends across it some of which have also cracked along part of the length of the bend. Much of the edge of the disc is also damaged resulting in an irregular circumference. No decoration is present on either side of the disc. Traces of a white metal coating are present on both surfaces however this survives to a much greater extent on the lo…

It consists of a sub-rectangular frame with the short sides broken at diffrent lengths. At one of the short end there is a circular cross-sectioned bar, which bears traces of wear at its middle, possibly due to the presence of a pin; the short sides break shortly after extending outward over the bar. An unidentified lead object, possibly a mould, roughly rectangular in shape and with a central suken area. The design is situated in a sunken circle, part of which has been destroyed by damage to the main lead slab. At the centre is a curving serpent-like design with a tassel of four parts as a tail and an S shaped body, leading to a possible head. This may only be half of a two-part mould, maybe for the creation of tokens or coin-like objects. There is also the possibility this was used for impressing a design into butter.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete copper alloy possible toggle or dress fastener dating from the post-Medieval period (circa 1600-1800 AD). This type of artefact was previously identified by Ralph Jackson (2010) and Sally Worrell (2008) as a Late Iron Age or early Roman cosmetic pestle, dating circa 75-300 AD. Some recorders suggest that at least some of these are in fact clothing fasteners; toggles similar to those on a duffle coat (see SOM-5CC893; FAKL-5A38B6). The date of these toggles is still unknown as none have been found in dated contexts. The object consists of a pointed oval with a circular cr…

The head is a shallow cup-shape with a flat base, flaring slightly out away from the shaft. The object has a mid-to-dark green patina with areas of corrosion. The rim of the stud is worn and uneven. The decorative filling of this cup-like stud appears to be millefiori glass inlay. Several areas of a blue-and-white millefiori chequer pattern can be seen on a red enamel or glass inlay field.
