Object type: BADGE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast lead-alloy badge, prooch or decorative pin. The badge is incomplete though would likely have taken a sub-circular form. There is a roughly cylindrical circle that forms the outer border, inside which, and attached to the border with thin stems of lead-alloy, is the figure of an animal, likely a snake. The body of the snake curves to form the outer circular border, and though some of the badge is missing, it appears that the border curves back into the centre and becomes the snake's tail, where it terminates in the snake's mouth. Two thin strips of lead hold the snake's head…

Record ID: OXON-1A5233
Object type: PILGRIM BADGE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast lead alloy pilgrim's badge of medieval date. The badge is flat and broadly triangular in plan, depicting a bishop's mitre and the head and draped shoulders of a saint, in this case, St Thomas Beckett. The reverse is missing any mounts or securing points and it is likely that this was part of a larger badge. Late 15th century AD.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast lead alloy weight, probably of Medieval to Post-Medieval date. The weight is in the shape of a truncated cone with a sub-circular flat base from which the sides taper inwards to the flattened round topped apex. The weight has been perforated, with an irregularly shaped hole running from the apex to the base. The weight measures 20.64mm in height, 32.80mm in diameter at the base and weighs 106.08 g. Lead weights were used for a long period and lack many diagnostic features, so are difficult to date precisely although most are Medieval or Post medieval in date.
