Incomplete medieval copper alloy book clasp of Howsam type A.1.1. A cast D-shaped plate with a central hole is decorated on its convex front with punched annulets and oblique moulded grooves, and there is a smaller transverse hole in a stylised animal-head terminal projecting from the centre of its curving edge. Broken pivot loops at the ends of the straight edge would have held a bar on which a sheet plate for the retention of a strap would have been held. Cf. SF-D2D044, a very close but complete example, and NMS-5D9195, equally close but similarly incomplete; also PUBLIC-955525. A r…

An incomplete early post-medieval (1500-1700) copper alloy book-clasp, missing the tip of its flat hook (old break, 4.9mm wide). The object has parallel sides with c.one third (the part behind the hook) being slightly wider than the rest, 10.7mm to 10.3mm. This slightly wider area is mostly obscured with a rough green corrosive product and numerous parallel grooved lines extend from the end of this area in to the body of the object, which has a much darker, smoother green patina. The final third of the body is again a rough, lighter green in colour with a 0.8mm diameter piercing betwe…

An apparently complete early post-medieval (1500-1700) copper alloy book-clasp, with slight damage to the terminal expansion. The book-clasp has a 4.3mm wide hook (which narrows to 3.7mm at its end), behind which is a rectangular expansion above beyond the body of the object, measuring 14.8x8.5mm. This is decorated with three grooves (longitudinal to it) within which is apparently a stamped decoration of rows of squares. Beyond the body of the book-clasp is 13.1mm wide and it flares slightly over c.40mm to 14.0mm just before the flared, expanded end (16.3mm wide). At the centre is a…
