Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Doncaster

A copper alloy probably Medieval unidentified object, probably dating from AD 1200 - 1500. It is a sub-square sheet of copper alloy decorated on one face with a raised rim and a cross saltire in relief. Owing to corrosion, it is not clear whether the cross is a separate piece or integral. There is a broken projection from the centre of one edge to the side, but it is not clear what form this had originally. The object has a dark green patina and is corroded. It is 24mm long, 19.5mm wide and 3.4mm thick. 4.91g. The object could possibly have been a book fitting or a buckle plate.

A copper alloy Medieval strap end probably dating from AD 1100 - 1300. It is made of a single strip of copper alloy folded widthways. In shape the strap end is rectangular at the closed end, but the attachment end is a lozenge shape. The front and back plates match. There is a single rivet which appears to be cast integrally with the front and then roughly hammered flat after going thorugh the strap and a hole in the back plate. There are traces of gilding on the front face. The remains of a fabric strap survive within the strap end. The metal has a dark green patina. The object is 35m…

Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Doncaster
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A possible incomplete Post Medieval cloth seal dating from about AD 1500 - 1700. It could be one disc of a rivet type seal of two or four discs that was not fastened by putting the integral rivet through the hole on the opposing disc successfully. It has a stamp impression on one face, but the circular sectioned integral rivet protruding from the other has not been squashed flat, though it does possibly have traces of a stamped design on it, perhaps an A or V. The surviving impression on the main face seems to be a crowned I surrounded by a wreath, all within a beaded border, and outsi…

An incomplete lead alloy button, probably of late Medieval dating (about AD 1300 - 1500). The head of the button is circular, and slightly domed, with a flat back. The arms of the cross terminate with a pellet, with further pellets round the outer edge in the angle of each chevron. There is also a pellet in the centre. The pellets are all very worn. On half of the button, the raised cross appears to be a separate piece of lead from the backplate, though this is not evident on the undamaged side. …
