Record ID: LANCUM-1DC391
Object type: BRACELET
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Complete copper-alloy ring, possibly a Roman bracelet dating within the period c. 43 - 410 AD. The object is formed from a pointed-oval band. Surface detail has been fully obscured by harsh corrosion and wear from deposition near salt water. As a result, the surface is rough, with a patchy green and light brown patina and it is impossible to tell whether the band would have sported moulded decoration of the type commonly exhibited by bracelets of Roman date. Identification is therefore based on the form and size of the objects, which bears similarities similarly tentatively dated exam…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cumbria

Copper-alloy ring of uncertain function, probably dating to the medieval or post-medieval period (c. 1100 - 1700 AD). The ring is circular and of slightly irregular thickness. The inner edge is bevelled around half of the circle on the upper side. The other half of the circle is bevelled on the underside. The outer edge is bevelled on both sides but with irregular consistency. The surface of the object is heavily abraded due to deposition close to salt water. This has resulted in a mottled appearance, with some smooth shiny patches and much pitting. Although this object bears similari…

Complete lead spindle whorl of uncertain date within a probable Roman to medieval date range (c. 43 - 1500 AD). The spindle whorl is of uneven shape; it is flat on the underside with a domed upper face and a central circular perforation hole. The object is circular in plan. The central hole is now filled with organic detriment due to deposition in the ground. The surface of the object is rough and pitted. It is white in colour. The spindle whorl is 27.00mm in diameter and 7.00mm in thickness. The diameter of the hole is 7.00mm. The object weighs 19.24g. Lead objects are difficult t…
