An incomplete copper alloy Aesica type bow brooch dating to the early Romano-British period (circa AD 43-100). The brooch has an open cylindrical spring casing, with a short length of spring wound around around the copper alloy axis bar. This may be a crude replacement for a hinged pin, as the aperture is rather slim and squared off. The bow has an arched lozenge-shaped form with a central cast longitudinal rib flanked by two triangular 'wings'. These each contain a curved triangular inset to hold enamel, perhaps originally red in colour. Either side of the central rib is a groove con…

An incomplete copper alloy enamelled bow-and-fantail brooch dating from the early Romano-British period (circa AD 50-150). The brooch has a very flat semi-cylindrical spring casing wth the stub of either a rearhook or a headloop. The bow is formed of a disc containing a red enamel circle divided into quarters by the arms of a four-armed star motif extending from a central enamelled circle in an off-white colour. The off-white colour of the enamel may have degraded from an original yellow. This disc expands into a triangular fantail foot, containing a red enamelled triangle motif. This…

A post-medieval copper-alloy object. Possibly a hook? The top is in the figure of a bird, with a curved bill with nostrils in a slightly raised 'cere' (a waxy structure that covers the base of some birds' bills), eyes set in a feather-textured head and a two-pointed crest on the back of the head. The 'neck' of the bird is a four-sided, rectangular shaft which tapers on all sides to a point, very like a nail. It is likely that this shaft was once straight, though it is currently bent at the base in the same direction as the head of the bird. There are three notches spaced along each co…

Fragment of copper-alloy leg and foot from a medieval or post-medieval cooking vessel such as a pot or cauldron. The leg has a flat inner surface with a slight curve outwards. There is a decorative, strengthening ridge running down the centre of the outer face. The leg flares at the base, outwards and very slightly to the sides, to provide a stable foot. The leg is blackened from the fire, especially on the sides and a little on the central ridge. The rest of the surface has patched pale beige, brown, and green-blue colouring. Fragments are missing from the top and bottom of the right…
