A cast lead alloy trade weight dating from the Medieval period, about AD 1300 - 1500. It is thick, flat and shield shaped (flat top with curved sides meeting at a point at the base). The upper surface is stepped, with the central area much thicker than the edge. The centre may once have been decorated but the design is no longer legible. There is a large (5.3mm diameter), circular perforation in the centre of the upper edge of the shield. The lower border is decorated with indistinct beading, perhaps once representing a ropework design. The underside is flat and undecorated. The weigh…

Lead weight. Cast irregularly cuboid object with an originally round aperture of estimated diameter c.7mm; patinated and squashed. This resembles the massy weights used with fishing lines by beach anglers and modern sea fishermen, albeit more angular in form, though the surface condition indicates an object of some age. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1900 Length: 23mm, Width: 18.9mm, Thickness: 16.9mm, Weight: 35.44gms

Lead spindle whorl. Cast biconvex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 11mm. Each side bears moulded decoration comprising a prominent rim around the central hole, a slightly wandering circumferential rib at about the middle of either side, and a series of radial lines which pass from the rim of the central hole across the medial lines and joining a prominent flattened outer rim where the two halves meet. Pellets are scattered across this arrangement, most occupying the cells defined by intersecting lines. The mass may suggest a primary use plying cord. Suggested date: Po…

A collection of 657 probable round shot all found in the same hole. The balls are of two main sizes, the larger making up the majority of the group. The smaller balls are possibly for a pistol. One ball more closely resembles a shot plug. The rough diameter for the larger balls is approximately 17mm, and many have mould lines. There is a variation across the group in the level of oxidation on the surface of the balls, but this may be due to varying soil conditions throughout the hole. The average weight for the sample taken was 33.97g, with individual weights in the sample from 26.…

An incomplete lead alloy button, probably of late Medieval dating (about AD 1300 - 1500) and with evidence of repair. The head of the button is circular, and slightly domed, with a flat back.
