Record ID: SF-F5ABF1
Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete knapped and polished flint axehead dating to the Neolithic period, c. 4000-2500 BC. The butt and midsection are missing in an oblique patinated break, with only the lower body and cutting edge preserved extant. Deep negative flaking on both sides of the axe close to this break suggests this may have resulted from use. Demonstrating a rectangular section and slightly expanding flat sides, the axe has been manufactured on a piece of greyish flint which has now in places patinated to an off-white mottled with blue. Considerable iron staining on both faces marks the location…

A retouched flint flake, probably of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date, c. 3,300-1,600BC, possibly an unfinished or discarded projectile point. A tertiary sub-triangular flake of mottled grey flint, worked bifacially and with short, low angle, scalar retouch along both sides on one edge, this being the right edge of the dorsal face. Dimensions: length 22.7mm; width 21.9mm; thickness 4.8mm; weight 2.22g. A small assembage of flint recovered from the same field, probably largely of Neolithic date but extending into the Early Bronze Age. The assemblage contains one incomplete…

Seven flint scrapers of probable Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date, c. 4000-1,600 BC. 1. Incomplete secondary flake of slightly translucent brown flint with a small area of cortex surviving at the remaining distal end. Damage has resulted in the loss of both the proximal and distal ends, but with the suggestion of a large bulb of percussion on the ventral face. The left mesal edge of the dorsal face exhibits invasive, low angle, scalar retouch. length 35.9mm; width 40.4mm; thickness 6.7mm; weight 9.17g. 2. Secondary flake of opaque brown flint with cortex remaining on the left …
