Cast copper alloy rim fragment from a bowl or cooking vessel with a 15 mm wide internally bevelled rim that is triangular in profile and flush with the upper edge of the vessel. The body of the vessel curves downwards slightly, in profile, to suggest a shallow straight-sided bowl, and the curvature of the rim, in plan, suggests a diameter of about 300 mm. The bevelled rim itself is 6 mm thick which then tapers to the body which is 5 mm thick. The interior surface of the fragment is pitted from the sand casting process and the exterior surface has many parallel horizontal lines which a…

Copper alloy unidentified object. Cast object with a square flat base with a central drilled hole of diameter 5mm. The four sides converge towards a flat top bearing a stamped seriffed letter R. Each side also bears a pair of light vertical grooves, a fluting which recalls the traditional decorative scoring of ceramic jacks. The basal hole appears suited to a wooden peg, so this might equally be a playing piece for use with a holed board. The mass is almost exactly 3 units of 4.07gms, as used in Viking Age Scandinavia for silver bullion transactions, the form and material, however, dif…

Copper alloy possible miniature object. Cast teardrop-shaped object with flat sides with lightly bevelled edges and with a drilled hole of diameter 5.9mm and depth 8.5mm in one of its flat sides; the opposite side is [now] rounded at its edges. Abraded. If indeed an addition to the canon of miniature objects and weapons ascribed to the Roman period, this example would perhaps have been inspired by an axe hammer or 'battle axe' of Early Bronze Age date, with a separate handle inserted. This would be a somewhat earlier prototype than is usual for miniature weapons. Alternatively,…

A fragment of a copper-alloy Late Iron Age-Early Roman brooch probably of the Colchester Type, dating to c. AD 25-60. It consists of the foot of the brooch. The bow is a sub-rectangular in plan and it tapers slightly to the end; it has a sub-rectangular cross-section. The back face of the foot has traces of the integral catch-plate, which is perforated with two circular holes and a possibly triangular one, which survives only as a slot having one of its edge missing.
