The trapezoidal attachment loop is largely missing and the rearward curving part of the hook is also missing. The main body is sub-circular in plan, moulded at the front, flat and plain at the rear. At the front the body has a voided cross with a central quatrefoil. Each angle would have been pierced. However, only one piercing has penetrated completely. It is roughly oval in plan and is comprised of a layer of lead covered by a fragment of glass, which in turn is covered by another layer of lead that is uneven and exposing the glass in places. The layers are slightly offset into a little squashed sandwich. The lead sections are oxidised giving a white patina, while the glass of the original vessel is a light grey-green colour. Copper alloy brooch. Cast oval plate brooch with two orders or zones of stamped decoration around the central cell, Mackreth type British, Plate 3.b2. The innermost order is of juxtaposed triangles [probably Mackreth vol. 2 fig. 2 stamp 15] while the outermost comprises rounded figures [ibid. stamps 6-7]. The cell is now empty, with upstanding walls of height 2.5mm. The stub of a catch plate and the opposed pin seat, the latter with rust staining suggesting the loss of an iron pin, remain on the back.
