Cast lead vessel repair (pot mend). It is roughly oval in plan and is comprised of a layer of lead covered by a fragment of glass, which in turn is covered by another layer of lead that is uneven and exposing the glass in places. The layers are slightly offset into a little squashed sandwich. The lead sections are oxidised giving a white patina, while the glass of the original vessel is a light grey-green colour. The pot mend is 5.6mm high by 16.2mm wide, and weighs 3.43 g.
Pot mends of this form are found in both Roman and Medieval periods, as a common way to repair broken pottery…
