Similar shaped horse harness pendants have been dated to the middle of the medieval period, specifically the 14th century. Similar examples can be seen in Ashley (2002) page 12, examples 80 and 81. Other examples have been recorded by the PAS, this includes pendants from Kings Pyon, Herefordshire (HESH-58C353), Myddle, Shropshire (HESH-4A3A63) and Boxton, Essex (HESH-92D5F2).

Cast copper alloy, shield-shaped, heraldic harness pendant of probable 14th-century date (c.1250 - 1450).
The pendant is mostly complete apart from the suspension loop which is partially missing. An integral cast suspension loop located at the centre of the upper edge of the pendant is partially intact with traces of gilding. The loop is set at an angle of 90 degrees to the plane of the pendant. The pierced loop is incomplete. The front face of the pendant has a red field of enamel with a cross patoncé at the centre. There are traces of gilding which suggests the cross was originally picked out in gold. The reverse of the pendant is undecorated, but may also have been gilded. The surface of the harness pendant has been obscured by the use of renaissance wax.

Justine Bayley notes that the pattern of the enamel certainly looks Roman rather than later, but is uncertain as to what the object is. It is possible that the two flat lugs could have been used to fix the object on to a thick piece of leather. It is likely that the circular depressions on the front were originally filled with something, but whether it was glass/enamel is impossible to say.

Unidentified copper alloy object with inlaid enamel and millefiori panels, initially thought to be a Roman seal box dating from 1st to mid 3rd century AD.
The object is square in plan with two small rounded projections, one on each of the long sides. The upper surface has been divided into three rows of four square shaped cells. Each of the four corner cells contains a black and which chequer-board pattern of miliflori. The other cells are empty but may originally have contained coloured enamel. The underside of the object has a green/brown patina.

Medieval to Post Medieval (15th to 16th century) scabbard chape: The front plate remains of a cast copper alloy composite chape. The plate is an elongated sub-triangle in plan and 'n' shaped in section. At the lower tip of the chape is a small knop. The upper edge has a sub-'W' shape. There is a single transverse ridge across the outer face, close to the upper edge. The reverse is undecorated and the lower portion of the chape has traces of a back plate. The chape has traces of a mottled dark green patina. The chape measures 50.52mm in length, 27.92mm width, and is 5.69mm thick. It weighs 14.14 grams.
Similar composite chapes have been dated to the later medieval and early-post medieval period. The size of this one suggests that it would probably have been for a dagger rather than a sword. A similar example has been recorded from Herefordshire (HESH-8DB566).

Medieval to Post Medieval (c. 1100 until c. 1850) cooking vessel fragment: The fragment is sub semi-circular in plan which is thickened and an integral sub-rectangular, narrowed block at the lower edge. The lower portion has fine horizontal striations on the exterior and a smooth concave interior. The breaks are not recent. In the centre of the upper portion there is an elongated drop-shaped hole in the centre. This hole is where the handle or chain would be suspended from and the upper edge is worn. Just below the perforation, on one face there is a horizontal ridge which is triangular in section. It appears to delineate the rim of the vessel rather than the suspension element. It measures 46.03mm long, 32.44mm wide and 4.32mm thick. It weighs 19.12g.
The fragment is from a type of cooking vessel, some of which were suspended by chains. Egan (1998) illustrates a suspended cooking vessel with similar suspension loops, Figure 146, and Figure 137. These types of objects tend to date to the Medieval and early Post Medieval periods, c. 1100 until c. 1850 when cast iron cooking vessels are used instead.

Iron Age to Medieval (150 BC to 15th century) ring: A copper alloy sub-oval copper alloy ring with a bi-convex section with rounded corners. A small portion of the exterior edge is slightly straight which may be part of the casting process. The surface of the ring has an incomplete light brown patina.
It measures 29.54mm long, 28.74mm wide and 3.39mm thick. It weighs 5.97g.
Similar rings are illustrated in Jackson (1990) Nos. 152-155 which are described as harness fittings. There are possibly other uses of such a type of suspension loop, but these are also seen in the Medieval period as harness fittings or sword belt fittings.

Roman (AD c. 350-450) an incomplete cast copper-alloy buckle with a zoomorphic frame. The frame is almost complete. It is a sub D-shape with a slightly narrowed strap bar. The loop opposite has a moulded notch with fine ring-and-dot motif either side. The exterior edge of the corners has a flat projection with abraded edges which would have been a horse. The other corner is broken, but not recently. The reverse is undecorated. The pin is moulded and curled around the frame. The terminal of the pin is slightly swollen and tapers to a blunt point. The surface of the frame has a light-green patina.
It measures 24.17mm long, 25.87mm wide, 7.57mm thick and weighs 4.84g

A virtually complete copper-alloy sheet-metal bell dating to the later Medieval or early Post-Medieval periods, c. 1400-1550. The bell itself is made of three constituent pieces and is spherical in form- the two halves of the body are hemispherical in plan and have been soldered together at a ridged seam running around its circumference. At the apex of the bell is a suspension loop made from a flat rectangular piece of copper alloy sheet, which has been inserted into a hole in the top of the bell and subsequently soldered on. The sound holes and connecting slit have been cut into the lower portion of the bell, though the internal iron pea is now missing. Undecorated except for the remains of a white metal coating, the bell measures 19.09mm in length, 15.07mm in diameter at the midpoint of its body, and 6.19mm thick at the suspension loop. It weighs 1.93g.
A similar bell dating to the late 15th century can be found in Egan and Pritchard, 1991: 338-9, no. 1666. They do not appear to have come into fashion until the late 14th century (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 336) and were in common use into the early post-medieval period. See also ESS-316509 on the PAS database. The exact usage of this bell form is uncertain, possibly originating from (but not limited to) human dress articles, dog collars, hawk jesses or horse harnesses.
