A complete cast copper-alloy post-medieval pipe tamper, dating to the period AD c.1700-c.1900. The lower part of the object consists of a circular plate radiating outwards from the standing foot, culminating in a flat base. This base would be used for tamping down the tobacco in the bowl of a pipe as it is being packed, as well as for crushing the ash together to aid relighting. The object has a brown patina.The length is 24mm, diameter is 22mm and the weight 9.14g.
