A complete but worn Medieval (AD 1150-1500) copper-alloy, rotary key. The openwork bow is circular and flat on both faces. It has an outer diameter of 12.4mm with the inner hole of 7.45 mm diameter. The shank is oval and mainly solid but is hollow at the simple bit end where the key is slightly bent. The bit has an indentation on either side of the flat face which is parallel and adjacent to the shaft. The key has a greyish-green patina. The key measures 38.1mm long. The shaft is 23.3mm long. Medieval copper alloy key of Ward-Perkins' (1940) Type II dating to the period c. AD 1050 - 1300. Formed from a single piece of sheet metal, the bow is oval, with an off-centre aperture and exhibits traces of filing. The shank is rolled, with a roughly longitudinal seam. The crude bit projects from one side and has two chisel-cut wards. See: Ward-Perkins, J.B, 1940, p. 136 & pl. XXX, nos. 21 - 23.
