An incomplete repousse copper-alloy mount of probable Roman date, c. 43-410 AD. It is broadly rectangular in plan, demonstrating a flat outer border with two circular apertures-one at the top, and one at the bottom of the object. These presumably would originally have contained rivets, serving to attach the object to something. Within this, a rectangular inner border of repeating circular pelleted motifs frames the central decorative element, which takes the form of a human mask- the eyes, nose and mouth realistically rendered. A complete cast copper-alloy mount dating to the Medieval period, c. 1150-1250. The mount is rectangular in plan, with a single circular aperture for iron rivets (the remains of which survive in two of the holes) at each corner. The rear of the mount is covered with largely concreted ferrous corrosion product which has preserved some organic material (wood?) probably representing the remains of what it was originally attached to.
