Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 4, flat wing ends type), c.f. Mackreth Type 4.i. Plate 47, AD c. 80-240. The copper alloy brooch has a semi-cylindrical undecorated wing (one wing is missing) with the axis bar, spring and pin all missing. Early Medieval (11th century) harness fitting: harness link. The copper alloy cheek piece consists of an arm terminating with a loop at each end. The arm is a D-shaped in section, and has a swollen centre. This central section has a bulbous section and the arms protruding on either side is narrowed. Integral to each terminal is a loop, one is complete, the other incomplete. The breaks of the loop taper to a blunt point so the breaks are not recent and may be due to wear. The surface of the fitting is heavily abraded and has a matte red-brown surface. It measures 58.91mm long, 19.…

The lower edge is broken obliquely, The break is not recent. There is a lug either side of the neck of the ampulla. The surface of the ampulla has a light cream coloured patina. The ampulla measures 27.11mm long, 28.9mm wide, 8.83mm thick and weighs 16.47g. Late Iron Age to Roman (50-200) penannular brooch of Booth's Type A5. The brooch is fragmentary with only a terminal and a portion of the frame remaining. The frame is an asymmetrical pointed-oval in section, and crescentic in plan. The complete terminal has a bulbous knop and the other is a break, but not a recent one. The surface has a light green patina. It measures 36.55mm long, 16.25mm wide and 6.67mm thick. Probably Bronze Age (-1000 to -800) blade fragment: The cast copper alloy blade fragment is an elongated lozenge in cross-section with a convex surfaces. The breaks across the blade are old and rounded. The edges of the blade are slightly faceted. The surface of the blade has an incomplete mottled dark green and brown patina which is then heavily abraded. It measures 22.89mm long, 23.63mm wide, 7.74mm thick. It weighs 14.74 grams. It is probably a fragment from a sword or rapier of the Late Bronze Age date.
