A Post Medieval tin alloy token of James II (AD 1685-1688), dating to 1688. An "American plantations token", uncertain type. cf. examples published by Newman (1964: plate LVI). Such tokens were valued at one 24th of a Spanish real, or one and a half farthings. Minted in the closing months of James II's reign and intended for use in the colonies, it is doubtful that the tokens were ever officially authorised for circulation and there is no evidence they ever circulated in North America (Newman 1964: 324).
